Apple reveals iPhone 5 with 4-inch screen, LTE, A6 CPU and many surprises

Apple has just announced the iPhone 5 at their press event in YBCA San Fransisco. The iPhone 5 has everything a new iPhone should have. It comes with iOS 6 on board and has an increased screen real estate of 4-inches. Apple thinks it’s still a Retina display at 326 ppi ( 1,136 x 640 pixels) and 16:9 aspect ratio. While the operating system is friendly with the new screen size, it decides to show a black area above and below the apps which made for older iPhones. The iPhone 5 has 5 rows of app icons on springboard in addition to a row used as a dock at the bottom.

Talking of the farm factor, it has got a unibody design made up of aluminum and glass and nothing else – at least this is what Apple told us. This means there’s no plastics used in the body of the iPhone. It’s time to say good bye to the old school 30-pin dock connector and welcome the new tiny dock connector called the ‘Lightning connector’ – hint hint thunderbolt! Apple says it’s faster than the older connector and is 80% smaller than its previous counterpart. Non of your older accessories are going to work if you are going for the iPhone 5. Got a $500 iPhone music system? Scrap it!

iPhone 5 is powered by the A6 processor which Apple says is 22% smaller and more power efficient and definitely faster than A5 – how faster? Nobody would know until we treat it on a benchmark.

To treat your paparazzi, they’ve made enhancements to the camera without increasing sensor sensitivity. Who needs anything beyond 8 MP? It has now got a dynamic low light mode for greater shots in the dark and indoors; it’s faster – it takes pics at 40% faster speed than the iPhone 4S. I hope the opening speed of the camera app was also improved. In case you are planning a trip to Mars, your iPhone 5 has a built-in panorama mode which I believe is a stupid idea but it’s there.

If you are the type who uses the iPhone for cellular data, you are being treated with LTE, it’s the 4G iPhone 5. Make sense? Pretty cool but there are separate models for Verizon and AT&T.

Talk of weight. It must have got heavier with bigger size? It hasn’t. It’s rather 20% lighter than iPhone 4S at 12 gm. Things keep shrinking over time (hint: your wallet), so does iPhones. The iPhone 5 is 18% thinner than its previous model at 7.6mm.

iPhone 5 would be available in US on September 21 with pre-orders starting on 14th September.  16 GB model would be available at $199 with a two-year contract, 32GB and 64GB models would be sold for $299 and $399, respectively.

One more thing. iPhones are no more black and white. They are now black-and-slate and white-and-silver. Gorgeous eh?
