Apple introduces all new iPod touch with Siri, 5 MP camera and multiple colors

Apple has announced an all new iPod Touch at today’s press event with several new features. They have made the device more targeted to the younger audiences by making it available in 5 different colors including raw aluminum, black, blue, yellow and red. To make it clear, these colors are on the back side only, all those versions are white from the front except the back one.

On the technical side, the new iPod Touch is truly the younger brother of iPhone 5 with the same larger 4-inch retina display (1,136 x 640 pixels i.e. 326 ppi) and a 5MP iSight rear camera capable of taking still photos in addition to 1080p HD video recording capability. The camera would take much better photos with backside-illuminated f/2.4 lens and added image stabilization. There’s an accompanying feature in the camera app that allows you to take panoramic photos with the rear iSight camera. Don’t get surprised at 720p FaceTime cam on front side. FaceTime is naturally limited limited to Wi-fi, you know iTouches hate SIMs, right?

iPod Touch 5th Gen Family

‘iPhone for kids’ as we know it today or an ‘iPhone without the phone app’ does not have the same form factor as of iPhone 5, it has a rounded back and a flat front. It is only 6.1mm thick and just 88gm in weight. Although it does not have the A6 processor like iPhone 5, it has got the dual core A5 which is twice as fast as the previous version and it comes loaded with iOS 6.

Now that the device has got everything a teen’s favorite camera would have – even more than that, Apple has made sure it works perfect as a point-and-shoot digital camera for the kids and made a little protruding pin on the back which allows you to attach a camera strap to make carrying around easier. You know you wrap your cam’s strap around your wrist while taking photos of friends at the beach. Yah, you’d be doing just that with your iPod Touch soon. They did the straps in their own style: gave them a name of ‘iPod Touch Loops’ and made them available in same colors as the iPod touch itself.

Oh wait, the most surprising of all is Siri which is now available on this latest 5th generation iPod touch. Forever alone teens now have a friend. “I hate maths Siri.. wait, let me take a nap, I’d talk to you later.” – get ready for  such conversations in your classroom.

Don’t expect a low-end version an average teen can afford with his pocket money as there’s no 16GB model this time, only 32GB and 64GB models with $299 and $399 price tags. If you don’t want to contribute to your kid’s new iPod Touch, he’d still go ahead and buy the last generation for $199 – 16GB model. Nobody would buy the previous gen 32GB though because that’s only 50 bucks less than the new version at $249.

Update: Airplay mirroring is available on new iPod touch and it’d be available in October.
