Apple announces the new iPad with retina display and quad-core graphics

on 8 March at 3:32 pm

Apple held its iPad event earlier today at the Yerba Buana Center of Arts. As everybody was expecting, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the 4G LTE capable iPad with retina display and A5X CPU.

For the record, Apple didn’t call their new iPad the iPad 3 or anything, they just referred to it as “The New iPad”. We may call it the 3rd generation iPad for our own convenience. The new iPad has an Apple A5X chip that features the quad-code core graphics chip to power the new retina display which scales at 2048 x 1536p or 264 pixels per inch. To blow your mind, they mentioned that the total number of pixels on the retina display iPad are 3.1 million. What would you use so many pixels for? All the current apps would automatically get scaled on the new display, they’ll definitely look better and you’d watch 1080p HD movies too. iCloud now supports 1080p movies, you get them on your iPad and watch straight from iCloud.

The new iPad has a 5 megapixel camera on the back with 5-element lens, IR filter, and ISP built into the A5X chip and you can record 1080p video. There’s a front facing camera too, like you’d expect.

How’d you expect Siri to be left out? But it is. They say the new iPad has Siri but it is limited to dictation only.

The new iPad’s price is the same as the iPad 2, $499, $599 and $699 for 16GB, 32GB and 64 GB models. If you want the LTE version, you’d be paying $629, $729 and $829 for 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models. The new iPad will be shipped on March 16th and the pre-orders are live already.
