Apple has dropped a bomb with the introduction of Mac OS X Mountain Lion which brings all the major features of iOS to the Mac near you. The most prominent feature is the Messages app which is just the desktop version of iMessage, only more feature rich. Other important features of the new OS include the notification center, deeper iCloud integration, AirPlay mirroring and introduction of reminders and notes apps. Apple has made the beta version of Messages app for Mac available for the users of Mac OS X Lion too. Unfortunately it does not work on Snow Leopard. It is a 63.8MB download and replaces iChat once installed because it includes all of iChat functionality too as it supports gtalk, AIM, Yahoo! and Jabber accounts. Users may start a conversation on a Mac and continue it on their respective iDevices including iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches provided they are using the same email address on both the places. Messages app for mac can communicate with Messages app on the other end, iMessage on iDevices and supported chat services including gtalk, Yahoo!, AOL and Jabber. Users can send unlimited messages to iDevices for free, they can send pictures, videos and documents in addition to text. When configured, delivery and read status are also shown. Apple has also integrated FaceTime for Mac into the Messages app to allow video communication.
iMessage was Apple’s solution to costly SMS and MMS communications as it provided users with the facility of sending and receiving unlimited messages to and from iDevices. Blackberry’s similar service called BBM is one of the big reasons RIM phones are popular among European teens. iMessage and Messages app communications are safe and secure as Apple provides end-to-end encryption for all the messages sent and received. Apple is endorsing their app store ecosystem in Mac OS X Mountain Lion by introducing Gatekeeper certification system but for some reason they are not distributing Messages beta through Mac app store, it is instead available from their website as .dmg file for free.
